《三国演义》的英译比较与典籍外译的

策略探索

对《三国演义》两个英语全译本的译介策略进行比较研究，进而对典籍外译和中国文化走出去问题进行学理探讨。通过具体译例的对比分析，发现在翻译《三国演义》原作中的特质文化词、宏大故事结构和典故文化时，面对不同时代的社会语境和目标读者不同的阅读期待，第一个全译者邓罗采取音译、改写和意译为主的翻译策略，而半个多世纪后的第二个全译者罗慕士则采用转译、直译和译释结合的翻译策略。这是两位翻译家从各自时代的目标读者出发，在忠实于原作的基础上，为保证译文可读性与可接受性所做的有益尝试，也是他们的译本被各自的目标读者接受的重要原因。处在不同时代的邓罗和罗慕士对《三国演义》的成功译介给人们的一个重要启示是，文化经典的外译既要考虑忠实性和准确性，也要兼顾差异性和目的性，同时还要兼顾市场原则。

英文摘要：

This paper focuses on a comparative study of different translation strategies in two complete translations of Three Kingdoms, on which to base it conducts a further study of translation out of Chinese classics and out-going of Chinese literatures. Through the specific case study, the paper finds, in different social contexts and facing target reader’s different expectations, C. H. Brewitt-Taylor (the first translator of the complete translation) and Moss Roberts (the second translator of the complete translation) have taken different strategies when translating the unique images and Chinese culture, the grand structure and allusions of the source text. The former has taken transliteration, rewriting and free translation as the main strategies while the latter has chosen conversion, literal translation and translating combined with explaining over half century later. Actually, those are their tentative endeavors from the perspectives of target readers in different times, to ensure the readability and acceptability of their translations based on faithfulness to the source text. That is also an important reason why their translations are accepted by target readers respectively. Although produced in different times, the successful translations of C. H. Brewitt-Taylor’s and Moss Roberts’s provide us an important lesson, which is in translation out of Chinese classics, we should pay attention to faithfulness and accuracy while taking cultural differences and our translation aim into consideration. At the same time, the market principles should not be neglected as well.
